  2. Fabric is a lightweight, experimental modding toolchain for Minecraft.
Hey there! There isn't really much risk in downloading mods as long as you're getting them from the right sources. First of all there are two main modloaders, Forge and Fabric. Each modloader can only load mods made specifically for that modloader, so no mixing Forge and Fabric mods. As for downloading mods, Curseforge and Modrinth are trusted websites with moderators that will approve mods only when they are safe. Stardust Labs looks legit to me but I've never used it myself so I can't say either way. There was a small incident recently, one of the first ever which was handled very well with minimal impact, see Curseforge's response here: https://medium.com/overwolf/safeguarding-our-community-curseforge-fighting-malware-incident-report-e1e6d4059903 After this breach, Curseforge has new protocols in place in order to verify each mod's authenticity.
