Of course people will say 'just use salary.com or levels.fyi or whatever' but I find that the data tends to be out of date, and if it's self reported it varies in how truthful it really is. For these reasons I prefer the 'at what salary do I hear the recruiter on the other end of the line choking on his coffee?' method.
