Software Alternatives & Reviews

I told a buddy I wanted to buy a PC at the local big name electronics store but he stopped me. He insisted I build my own, but I have no clue where to start.

Ninite ChimeraOS
  1. 1
Ninite is the easiest way to install software.
    - go to ninite.com, it is a website that lets you install a bunch of commonly used software in a batch while automatically denying any adware junk. Here is what I would consider a good selection of software for a new PC running windows. Give windirstat a run it'll blow your mind when you realize what it's doing and make you wonder why windows doesn't visualize storage drive space use like that.

  2. Steam, Epic, GOG, retro consoles, and more... all from your couch
If you don't have a previous windows license and don't want to pay up for one then Linux is actually good these days! It actually might even be the strongest console-like option with chimeraOS, which uses the most recent version of SteamOS to create a console like setup usable with a controller. For a transition from windows there's Zorin OS, which has an interface aimed at easing the move to Linux and includes support needed for games from a fresh install. Both are free. Both are suitable for everyday use in their roles. Both will have plenty of support from the internet just like you're getting support building this PC now.
