Software Alternatives & Reviews

Best apps for a newbie to not miss ? I am going to use my first ever MBP I need recommendations please to make most of the machine

Recommended and mentioned products

  1. Window management app based on Spectacle, written in Swift.

  2. A ultra-light MacOS utility that helps hide menu bar icons.

  3. Super fast, GPU and OpenGL based terminal emulator with tiling support

Maybe a different terminal emulator like iterm2 for one with tons of features or something like kitty or alacritty for a lighter weight terminal.
  4. PopClip appears when you select text with your mouse on your Mac.

Popclip creates a popup to perform actions when you select text, similar to how iOS works.
  5. A terminal emulator for macOS that does amazing things.

Maybe a different terminal emulator like iterm2 for one with tons of features or something like kitty or alacritty for a lighter weight terminal.
  6. Switch between application windows effortlessly — with Fast Search, a better Command-Tab, a Sidebar or even a quick gesture. Free trial available.

Contexts is an app switcher (like cmd-tab or alt-tab) but the reason I like it is because it has a search feature that does a fuzzy search on open applications so you can type a couple letters to switch instead of having to cycle through a list like normal cmd-tab. You can actually create something almost identical in hammerspoon but I like contexts.
  7. The missing package manager for macOS

Homebrew is the most popular package manager on MacOS. It's painfully slow compared to linux package managers but it works. Macports is an alternative and Nix works on MacOS as well. They can be used to download both terminal and GUI applications.
  8. AppCleaner is a small application which allows you to thoroughly uninstall unwanted apps. Installing an application distributes many files throughout your System using space of your Hard Drive unnecessarily.
