The sheer stupidity of people is insane!

If I remember from the training, from Intercontinental Hotels and Resorts, the brand in charge of a bunch of hotel brands including the one she is working in, Holiday Inn, this happens more often than not and SHE is supposed to first let the customer deal with the situation through booking.com, but SHE is supposed to also be calling up local hotels to get them a room. The problem is the customer wasn't dealing with it. The ball was in his court. She literally said, your options are to cancel the room or call up booking.com and see what is up. This is the consequence of the risk you take when booking through third parties aka middle men. In this situation, it's not her or the hotel's fault. It's the third party website's fault until they explain.

I used to work in this area. Lesson #1 and I saw it a lot - try to book directly through the brand or the hotel instead of Booking.com, priceline.com, etc. All those online places.

Assholes like this do these things because they get away with it. What needs to happen is the hotel cancel the booking and hotels.com refuse his refund, which is actually likely since it sounds like whatever is going on has all the hotels in the area full. This usually prompts a "no cancellation after 24-48 hours" stipulation, so if you cancel after that time has expired you don't get a refund. Let's all pray that this is the case.
