I mostly used a website called warmshowers.org and another called couchsurfing.com which will allow you to stay in homes for free. Some people even feed you, fix your bike, and give you access to laundry. I only stayed in 1 hotel and it was only because there was a HUGE storm and it was far too windy to pitch a tent. I bartered down to $15 a night (which I had no idea I could do up until that point). The rest of the time I camped wherever I could. Once at a graveyard and another time behind an isolated gas station.
