For some publishers (e.g. j-novel.club), you can buy the books DRM-free directly from the publisher, but in most cases, you have to buy them from a store that sells e-books. Some of the more common ones are kobo.com, amazon.com, bn.com, play.google.com/books, and global.bookwalker.jp. Other than Bookwalker, it's possible to strip the DRM from books you buy using the calibre plugins found here. If you don't remove the DRM, you will be forced to use whatever apps or e-readers there are associated with the store that you bought your books from, whereas if you go to the trouble of stripping off the DRM, you can then use any compatible e-book app or e-reader.
