Call United.. Give them your name, and the flight details and ask them for the confirmation code. They will ask you other questions to verify its you.. But once they give you the confirmation code.. It should work online. My thought is either trip.com gave you their internal confirmation code, not Uniteds.. Or at the time you checked on United, it hadnt been completed yet by trips.com so it wasnt a viable reservation on Uniteds site yet.

United Airlines is a reservation site for flights where you can book airline tickets and is also offering membership for exclusive discounts.
It looks like trip.com is getting access to Basic Economy that United's website isn't making available. Here is an example. Seattle-Newark 6/17. Basic Economy on trip,com is $191. Same flight, regular economy on united.com is $539.
