YSK A Hotel’s free-cancellation policy has nothing to do with a possible refund, and you should always familiarize yourself with their refund policy when traveling. Just in case.

I'll be honest, over the years I've had far better experience booking via booking.com than booking directly with hotels. Where I've pre-paid for the room and then cancelled, I've always received a full refund. Where I've had a problem, its never been an issue to resolve it. Where I've need to update the booking, its always been very easy.

True, with the exception of if you use a third party booking site i.e. hotels.com priceline.com booking.com. Once you make a reservation through any of these online sites, everything pertaining to your reservation must go back through that site, this includes cancellations.
