I think the money is a big attraction for a lot of people. I make really good money as a software developer, especially for the area where I live, but a quick glance at levels.fyi tells me that I could approximately double my total compensation if I went to FB (although nearly all of those gains would be in equity, which would have a vesting period, so realizing that gain would require a multi-year commitment). Even for people who are otherwise well compensated, an extra $300,000 year or so isn't so easy to dismiss outright regardless of the ethics of the company.
