  1. Say hello to the modern independent podcast management platform.
There are plenty of podcast hosting services that are cheaper or free (Buzzsprout, Podbean, Anchor, Simplecast, etc.) so do some research and figure out what's best for you!

We use three different bits of software during our gameplay recording sessions. The first is Audacity, which records our mic audio. We use 'split stereo to mono' in order to record a separate track for each mic. The second is OBS, which records the game play video and audio. I know there's a number of folks in the AOLP community that use OBS to capture both the game and their commentary, and hopefully they'll chime in with their own process below. The third piece of the puzzle is whatever we're using to play the game. This could be Steam, or it could be (hypothetically) some app that allows one to play older games that aren't supported on PC. N64 or PS1 games for example.

The editing software we use is Adobe Audition, mostly because Haney already had access to the Adobe suite, so it was the first app I learned. There are plenty of free or affordable options for editing your podcast (You can apparently edit in Audacity, which is free, and I've heard good things about Reaper and Hindenburg), so I can't recommend going with Audition unless you already have access to it, or you're getting some kind of discount.

We've used two podcast hosting services during the course of First Encounter. The first was Blubrry, which we had some issues with. We moved to Libsyn, and it's been smooth sailing from that point on. The analytics they provide us are great, distribution easy, and uploading episodes and editing all the description nonsense is a breeze.

  6. Download Peace Equalizer, interface Equalizer APO for free.
Mics: Jess and Steve use a Blue Snowball popped in between them, and I have an Audio Technica ATR-2100x. I have some EQ and noise gate and compression stuff set up through Peace and EqualizerAPO. The dream is a mic for each of them so I have two tracks of audio, but I'm not sure how they would record without picking eachother up, or how to do it without hampering '2 friends on a couch' vibe.
