I'd say you'd want to play around with these distro for like 15 minutes, just to see how it broadly looks like: Zorin OS, Feren OS, Ubuntu Budgie, Manjaro Gnome, and PopOS. Zorin is what I'd recommend for very new users.

As far as Civ5 goes, I played it, it was fine, was able to play with my friends just fine. There's a bunch of options for music - try to browse around flathub for what looks good - I just stuck with mpv and vlc for my media. And I think PopOS touted its OOTB AI coding environment, but it just means less setup from what I could tell.
