But you can sort of have your cake and eat it too. I assume that you're on android since you didn't mention iMessage, which is the standard SMS app on apple. If that's the case, you can check out either the google messages app (which is the best imo) or if you're specifically on Samsung, the defaults Samsung messages app should be getting what are called 'chat' features or RCS. It will transparently upgrade your SMS to a chat protocol in a native SMS app if someone on the other side is using an app that supports the same cross-app protocol. It's still early days, but you don't have to tether yourself to any particular company to use it.
