This is only anecdata of a realtively inexperienced eng, but I made a game[1] that runs user's javascript code on the server (that code controls the AI for their unit in a StarCraft-style RTS). Isolating that code and making everything 'safe' and proper is an ongoing nightmare. 1: https://yare.io. - Source: Hacker News / 5 months ago
Speaking of 'programming is a game' I hope it's okay to share something I've been working on for a while in the genre of 'programming as a game mechanic': https://yare.io. - Source: Hacker News / over 1 year ago
I'm a designer claiming to also know a bit of engineering. Proving it by building a programming game – https://yare.io – was very useful in all interviews. And I hope that in the current AI boom, building https://meoweler.com will prove at least tiny bit useful when trying to get into AI jobs. - Source: Hacker News / over 1 year ago
I have been working on a programming game https://yare.io but kinda burnt out on it. The last 5% of polish/onboarding/marketing is so hard to get through. Would happily join the group to hopefully rise my spirit a bit! - Source: Hacker News / about 2 years ago
Cool. This reminded me of another project https://yare.io/. Source: about 2 years ago
The motivation behind my side projects has been mostly having an entertaining outlet for learning new things. One of these is https://yare.io that taught me plenty about building something end-to-end. From concept, design, front end, back end and failed marketing efforts. Despite 0 revenue, the experience itself is greatly rewarding. - Source: Hacker News / about 2 years ago
The game looks pretty dead to me already, most people on the leaderboard have the default 1500 points. The little icon for yare2 in the top left corner simply loops back to yare.io. Source: over 2 years ago
Hi! I've been working on this side project for a long time. An initially simple programming game has evolved into something a little more complex with the ability to not only control the units with code, but now practically anything is programmable. E.g. The players can build their own UI elements to play the game with (when you choose 'play with mouse and keyboard' on the homescreen, it showcases what is possible... Source: over 2 years ago
You can play either against bots or in 1v1 matches with real people: https://yare.io. Source: over 2 years ago
Not a full-time developer, but I have been struggling with developing my first game a lot as a side project next to a regular day-job. It's already in a kind-of beta state (https://yare.io), but still far from finished and would love to be part of such group! - Source: Hacker News / over 2 years ago
Is it fun to just be a mean person online? I've looked at screeps and it looks really cool but hardly fills the exact role of yare.io. Its not an mmo. And seems the similarities lie in the fact that you play it with Javascript.. Any game you can play by coding I guess is a copy of Screeps.. There is a lot of Effort that must have went into yare.io. If you are so quick to say rude comments I'd like to see some of... Source: about 3 years ago
For people that want to learn/improve in javascript in a more 'entertaining' way — I made an educational javascript RTS game: https://yare.io. - Source: Hacker News / over 3 years ago
Yare.io - RTS like starcraft, but you control everything with JavaScript. Source: over 3 years ago
Https://yare.io/ is a real-time strategy game where you control your units by writing (Javascript) code. Source: over 3 years ago
I have done something similar - building a game while working full-time. But my approach was the complete opposite of this article. No real process, no plan, no scrum method, not even a trello board to track progress and todos. Personally, I enjoyed the "fun" of it being very spontaneous, yet still passionate. I didn't write to-dos and tasks to be done, because there is always something to be done. And intuitively... - Source: Hacker News / over 3 years ago
I have created something that goes in the other extreme — very simple game rules, but you are free to code in whatever behaviour you want — https://yare.io. - Source: Hacker News / over 3 years ago
Just a tiny bit offtopic, but for a different kind of competitive programming, I made https://yare.io (1v1 StarCraft-like RTS, but you control units by writing javascript. - Source: Hacker News / over 3 years ago
