  • Seeking Community Feedback: Help Shape Vates' Partner Program
Our developments include a Hypervisor (XCP-ng) and a Cloud Automation solution (XenOrchestra). Combined, these, alongside excellent first-party support and various tooling, form the Vates Virtualization Management Stack (or VMS). Source: 11 months ago
  • Moved a VM between nodes - I'm buzzing!
Check out xcp-ng, a free and open source version of xenserver. Source: about 1 year ago
  • Found this group and I have a home lab :-)

  • Revamping HomeLab - Can you Help?
Whatever you're most comfortable with. There's proxmox (Debian Linux), xcp-ng (Xenserver), vmware esxi, Hyper-V (Windows), harvester (SUSE Linux), or even just plain ol linux with cockpit (Linux) installed for easy management. If you're asking what I'm using, I'm actually trying to use them all, so I currently don't have a preference myself. But I would use these hypervisors to manage the VM. I would run Docker in... • What OS?
Xcp-NG https://xcp-ng.org and Xen Orchestra . Seems more polished than proxomox and the built in backup is very good. Source: over 1 year ago
  • VMware Alternatives?
If you're very comfortable with *nix systems, XCP-ng https://xcp-ng.org/ with Zen Orchestra is a really nice alternative and it's free* as in beer but you can pay for support. I use it at home, but my work is still a Hyper-V shop so I don't have much experience with it in production but for home it's been much nicer than esx-i. Source: over 1 year ago
  • VMware Alternatives?
How about the open source Port of Xen Server? https://xcp-ng.org/. Source: over 1 year ago
  • OS and VM setup on my home server suggestions.
Any operating system will work. Hell, you could throw Windows 10 on it, and it'll do everything you want. For making experimentation easier, however, I would suggest some sort of hypervisor, like xcp-ng, proxmox, esxi, hyper-v, or SmartOS. Source: over 1 year ago
  • We built an Open Source KVM- based Hypervisor for managing server virtualization. Give a try, and hope you like it.
If you want vmware like experience then take a look at xcp-ng.org. There are plenty of YouTube videos on how to set this up. Source: over 1 year ago
  • cyber.org range VMs
On-Prem: You could install XCP-Ng on some hardware with Xen Orchestra, both are open source. https://xcp-ng.org. Source: over 1 year ago
  • Proxmox/unraid
Https://xcp-ng.org/ is the URL for the open source version of Citrix XEN. It is a hypervisor in the same context as proxmox or esxi. It uses qemu to run the virtual machines. Source: almost 2 years ago
  • So a question.....imagine your new to homelabbing, you get given the below to get you started down the path of learning things, it's been upgraded to have 16gb, E3 Xeon and has 4x 2TB HDDs and an SSD, what do you load on it to it? which hypervisor would you choose, what VMs/containers would run?
So there are the standards, VMware, Hyper-V, Proxmox. I run all these in production. One I have been thinking about trying is open source. XCP. Source: almost 2 years ago
  • Broadcom to 'focus on rapid transition to subscriptions' for VMware

  • A K12sysadmin’s Musings and Recap of the Past Few Years
Now more than ever, we should be considering using Free and Open Source technologies before rushing out and buying products and services. Automation tools like Ansible, or software management tools like Munki are high quality and free. Even traditional needs like storage and firewalling can be augmented with high quality open source products like PFSense or TrueNAS. Hell, Packet Fence can even give you an... I've also used this https://xcp-ng.org/ easy to use and free for use. Source: about 2 years ago
  • Ask HN: Which VM orchestrator do you use?
I use XCP-Ng for orchestration[0] and Xen-Orchestra for management[1], both are open-source. Xen-Orchestra is open-core but if you build from sources or use an unofficial docker image, you can get a lot of the commercial offering back for free at your own risk. With Xen-Orchestra you manage one or more XCP-Ng Servers, combine them in pools, live migrate between hosts, patch your hosts and schedule VM backups to... - Source: Hacker News / about 2 years ago
