  • Helm by Matt Tytel
This was the first subtractive snth I got really into. It's so good! Matt Tytel also made an open source wave table synth called vital that I'm also in love with that you can find here: https://vital.audio/ git repo is here: https://github.com/mtytel/vital. - Source: Hacker News / 5 months ago
  • Helm by Matt Tytel
Don't forget Vital which is Matt's newer synth. It continues to be open-source as well. https://vital.audio/. - Source: Hacker News / 5 months ago
  • Ask HN: Comment here about whatever you're passionate about at the moment
Good stuff! I started getting in to this at the start of the year. Already had an old, dusty MicroKORG and MIDI interface to use it as a controller, but recently splashed out on a bigger controller as the Korg's tiny keys were hurting me - plus, I wanted something bigger to get better at piano! A couple of free soft synths I'd recommend are Surge XT, and Vital. https://surge-synthesizer.github.io/... - Source: Hacker News / 6 months ago
  • Ardour 8.0 released
Serge is great, but Vital whips the llama's ass: https://vital.audio/ There was a time when Sylenth and Serum-quality synthesizers didn't exist for free. Back then, shit like Serge and Helm were really the best you could rely on. Maybe a few free U-HE plugins or your DAW defaults. Today's producers are downright spoiled with so many excellent free options! - Source: Hacker News / 7 months ago
  • Where do I start designing my own audio for my games?
Download Vital Synth from https://vital.audio/ and install it. It usually goes into some VST folder. Then point Reaper (under settings/preferences plugins location) to that folder so it can find it. Source: 10 months ago
  • Where to start?
Heres a free synth thats like Serum and its for free - https://vital.audio/ that will get you making leads, basses, pads and will give you the opportunity to play with complex wavetable synthesis which is a great start for EDM music. Source: 10 months ago
  • Best free/cheap software synths and learning materials?
Check out Vital, which is a free wavetable synth with a really good UI. Venus Theory on Youtube has some good tutorials on how to use it. Source: 10 months ago
  • Ableton veterans, what would you do differently? (Advice for beginners)
I think if you are familiar with Serum you should stick with it. Ableton Wavetable is mighty but not as mighty as Serum. If you'd need another plugin try out Vital. It's free and called "Serum Killer". Source: 10 months ago
  • Any plug ins / VSTs for a shoegaze sound? (Loveless / Pygmalion)
Not a synth, but when I want to add that kind of dreamy swirl to things I use two free effects: OrilRiver Reverb + Acon Digital Multiply Chorus. Chained together on a bus so the chorus is only effecting the reverb, usually. I tend to use Vital for most of my synth needs as I have the paid version and it's really flexible and easy to use, but Surge XT is another good free option that's a bit more intimidating but... • How to sound design the human voice?
If you use Ableton Live, there's a Max For Live device called Mouth Play that models a vocal tract that you can then modify. It's an instrument with its own oscillators/FM, but can receive external audio. So you could use that with something like Vital's formant filters shaping the synth input. Source: 11 months ago
  • Good Free VSTs for starting my controlling adventure?
A free synth is VITAL https://vital.audio/ for which Stef Haynes u/slowlearner5T3F has created a pack of really good sounds to start with. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZVvPOWxydws&ab_channel=StefHaynes. Source: 11 months ago
  • [Omnisph. & Keyscape, etc. vs Roland Fantom] I Made An Impulse Purchase And Want Opinions...
The second advantage is processing power; you can dedicate your entire CPU at realistically recreating a vintage (or modern) instrument. With the Model Expansions there's a compromise; you want to keep some voices/performance left. Its biggest strength is also its biggest weakness; a CPU will happily go over 100% usage and start to fail. There's no safety limit. Source: 11 months ago
  • Check out my song 'High On You' I took the advice of a lot of you and spiced up the drums. Let me know what you think. Any feedback is appreciated. All of you have helped me so much with your feedback, I can' t thank you enough. As always, let me know what can be fixed please.
There is also a free alternative for Serum that is almost as good. Its on this website https://vital.audio. Source: 11 months ago
  • Learning synth design as a progressive metal guitarist?
There are dozens and dozens of videos out there for beginner basics; just find one with a voice that doesn't annoy you and follow along in something free, like Vital. Source: 11 months ago
  • where can I get weapon sounds?
It's when a sound is generated using a "synthesizer" - an electronic musical instrument. Here's a free and quite popular software synthesizer you could check out: https://vital.audio/ And here's a tutorial series for it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=INNTSM04kgw. Source: 11 months ago
  • Best synthesizer software?
Placing notes on a grid is normally a feature of the DAW, not the synth. Waveform Free is an example of a free DAW you could use to arrange notes on a grid, and Vital is an amazing free synth you could use with it. Source: 11 months ago
  • Totally new into synth world and want to make music like SHRVL. Any guidance?
When you feel that you've got a good handle on Tyrell, consider graduating to https://surge-synthesizer.github.io/ or https://vital.audio/ . Source: 11 months ago
  • What plug-ins are really valid yet are not so known?
Along with https://vital.audio/ you're pretty much covered for epic synths. Source: 11 months ago
  • I recreated the Needles Piano in Vital VST (+Download)
Link to Plugin (it's free but you'd need to create an account rq to download it): https://vital.audio/. Source: 12 months ago
  • I'M TIRED! Alternatives to sampling from Splice / Loopcloud!!
Vital: https://vital.audio/ Free Synth DRUMBIT: https://drumbit.app/ A fun sequencer that you can programme and bounce beats out of. Source: 12 months ago
  • Why is everything so expensive? :(
What about synths? Synths are a more difficult area to glide free on. Vital is your friend. A lot of people recommend Surge; it is powerful, but it's a lot to learn. You'll also find the more you produce, the less you use, so learning a few decent core synths is all you really need. I've also found that using the "compromising" synths have led me down sound design paths I would have never discovered in a "full... Source: 12 months ago
