  • Show HN: Crazierl โ€“ An Erlang Operating System
I don't think v86 [1] is based on qemu, but it's a javascript (well javascript + rust->wasm) virtual PC. Not my project, it's super lovely for hobby os demos though. (And they've taken a couple of my PRs!) [1] https://copy.sh/v86/ https://github.com/copy/v86. - Source: Hacker News / 2 months ago

  • The Browser Is the Sandbox
On the second tab (which is a text/browser interface to the VM) here: https://copy.sh/v86/?profile=buildroot , you can start sh shell, and run arbitrary commands, and see output. Making a programmatic i/o stream is left as an exercise (to claude perhaps :). - Source: Hacker News / 4 months ago
  • Let's Help NetBSD Cross the Finish Line Before 2025 Ends
This might be one of the reasons why things like chatgpt (OpenAI) etc. Are releasing atlas etc. This is their attempt of everything app, where the whole internet would be behind the UI of their chatbot and it would go through an LLM before being changed by it and then it would pass to us. Your single comment explains a lot really and this is something that I agree. Everything App is the browser/internet, combining... - Source: Hacker News / 7 months ago
  • Run 14 vintage OSes (Windows 1.01โ†’XP, ReactOS, Haiku) in the browser
This is cool, but it is giving me AI generated vibes. What exactly does yours do that http://copy.sh/v86 doesn't? - Source: Hacker News / 8 months ago
  • The Incredible 1.44M Demo version 4.05 (Modem)

Real thing is possible on https://copy.sh/v86/ I think but need an XP disk image[1], not readily available at the moment (probably for copyright reasons?). [1]: https://github.com/copy/v86/issues/86. - Source: Hacker News / 10 months ago

  • Apple introduces a delightful and elegant new software design
    > One reason for flat design is because it was the lowest common denominator and easy for devs to implement. The 3D buttons in Windows 98 (Start button, for example) must have be harder to develop due to the animation involved. Yet, that was perfectly fine on hardware much older than those on which flat UIs were developed. I think you are missing the main point, which is that designers maul designs every season... - Source: Hacker News / 12 months ago
  • Porting Tailscale to Plan 9
In case y'all missed it in the first post, and you just want to try this out, it's working in this v86 image: https://copy.sh/v86/?profile=custom&m=768&vram=16&hda.url=https://ftp.plan9.ts.net/plan9.img&hda.size=16000000&nojoke=1 You can start tailscaled and tailscale inside the VM. It may take a while to come online sometimes due to limited proxy availability. - Source: Hacker News / about 1 year ago
  • Recommendation for non-DOS/Unix open source OS outside x86/X64
I've got a hobby OS that's currently x86 32-bit only. Amd64 and arm64 are on my roadmap, but if all goes well, it's going to be the same experience on all three platforms, so arm64 won't be anymore exciting than x86 32-bit. Other than, you could run it on a raspberry pi or maybe an arm apple. I imagine most hobby OSes are looking at arm support vs adding something else, and arm support is going to be more fiddly... - Source: Hacker News / about 1 year ago
  • Make Ubuntu packages 90% faster by rebuilding them
Not a bad idea. Arch also comes to mind, and its support on https://copy.sh/v86/ is a testament to its flexibility. - Source: Hacker News / about 1 year ago

  • WASI 0.2.0 and Why It Matters
    > As a thought experiment, we're almost there! We could technically have `win95.img + bochs86vm.wasm + autorun.inf + msword.exe` wrapped in a "browser evaluator" I looked into this and... Holy crap! We are there. Not for modern programs quite yet, sure, but this is amazing. I think you are looking for Shadow. https://shadow.goose.icu Or just the whole kitchen sink. Why not? http://copy.sh/v86/?profile=windows98. - Source: Hacker News / over 2 years ago
  • Virtual Computer Museum โ€“ VNC into Archaic Windows Systems
It's great that someone is trying to preserve these operating systems. However the choice of limiting it to 1 user per OS at a time makes the museum/website unusable. I tried several times over the span of 20 minutes and couldn't get into a single VM. While it doesn't cover everything, there is no shortage of browser-based emulators that can run most of the software listed. Windows 1.0, 1.1, 2.0, 3.0, 3.1... - Source: Hacker News / over 2 years ago

  • Kolibri OS: fits on a floppy disk, programmed using interrupts
Trying it out in https://copy.sh/v86/?profile=kolibrios , it's also clearly a love letter to Windows 95 in particular. That could be an unstated goal here, create a very particular PC experience under very particular constraints. I don't know anything about the creator but it's very possible that this kind of work was actually their career in the 90s. It's incredible how much work was done. Maybe this should be an... - Source: Hacker News / over 2 years ago
