I really thought this article was going to offer a solution, not just enumerate the problems. I'm already all too familiar with the problems. I like what Umbrel[0] is doing. They're essentially expecting that just like computing was able to move from centralized mainframes to homes, servers are poised to make the same migration. I think they really need to solve redundancy, though. If I'm to self-host... - Source: Hacker News / 4 months ago

I toyed with Umbrel[0] but only to try it out. I was unsure of the security model of having all my eggs in one basket. I only self-host things as separate and distinct instances now. [0] https://umbrel.com/. - Source: Hacker News / 11 months ago
It's worth mention umbrel, https://umbrel.com/ Once umbrel is setup apps are are just as easy to update and install as an iPhone. I also appreciate how it has a dependency system so apps can build on one another. Umbrel is more for personal homelab rather than sharing with friends, there is no public endpoint you would want on the clearnet, you need to VPN in, but that also makes it more secure. - Source: Hacker News / 11 months ago

As a beginner, I would recommend umbrel. Umbrel is basically a free open source operating system that comes with the ability to configure a bunch of open source apps tailored for bitcoin. Everything is built so each app runs in its own (linux) docker container. For example, in umbrel, you can go to the App Store and download an app that is a plug-in-and-go full bitcoin node and set it up with a single click. You... Source: about 1 year ago
I'm fascinated by onion routing technology and am using it as a built in feature of [Umbrel](https://umbrel.com/) on a raspberry pi to access my home network as an alternative to setting up SSL and exposing ports. I have a question regarding the security setup of something like this. Given I do not have SSL set up on my home access point, couldn't an exit node next to my home network see plaintext data of my login... Source: about 1 year ago
