    I just wanted to throw my 2 cents in. system-rescue.org/ just came out with version 8 of their distribution. It has a lot of great tools available to rescue a broken system. I still need to create my live usb of this great tool. It has tons of resources. It starts in the console but a quick startx command will get you into an XFCE environment.
