  Although the filesystem might be corrupted and won't mount, it may be possible that the raw block device itself is still accessible. To test this, you'll need to either be using Linux or boot to a Linux usb (SystemRescue is a good choice for this.). Source: over 2 years ago

  I just wanted to throw my 2 cents in. system-rescue.org/ just came out with version 8 of their distribution. It has a lot of great tools available to rescue a broken system. I still need to create my live usb of this great tool. It has tons of resources. It starts in the console but a quick startx command will get you into an XFCE environment.
