DuckDuckGo & Co. - DDG, Swisscows and Ecosia all use Bing index. For people that only care about privacy, this is a non-issue. But I don't like the idea that the entirety of web currently depends on just two companies. So I personally don't use them. Same logic extends to Startpage, which is owned by an ad company & uses Google's results. As they rely on the Big 2, they're closer to frontends/MetaSearch engines in... Source: over 2 years ago
I recommend you use swisscows.com to search instead, its not censored in the same way that duckduckgo.com and google.com is censored with different results appearing. Source: about 3 years ago
I use brave, google (for technical subjects when I can't find answer with brave), and for anything that has a remote chance to be censored I use engines with their own crawlers : fireball.de, gigablast.com, yandex.com and other browsers to be sure but I don't think they have their own crawler : lycos.com, swisscows.com, mojeek.com, metager.de. We would need a locally served meta search engine that search on all... Source: about 3 years ago

No, I'm in the US. What is a VPN? I have not changed any settings recently, and it worked fine last week. Would changing the browser have changed settings? I did have the same problem with swisscows.com . Good idea, I will try to see if I can log in on my husband's computer. Source: over 3 years ago
The name doesn't sound like much but, I just found out https://swisscows.com and it gives better results than Qwant for those outside EU. I'll be using it as my secondary engine, next to DDG, and see how it grows. Source: over 3 years ago

I want to change my search engine from duckduckgo (after their stance on Russia, but I was always skeptical of them and was already exploring some alternatives) to something which displays unbiased results irrespective of what my entry is, and I have noticed many people suggesting Searx as a better alternative. I am also aware of other search engines like Swisscows, Mojeek, Metager, etc. However, I want to... Source: over 3 years ago

I have found that copying an RT title to a search engine (I use https://swisscows.com/) will get results from any number of news sites around the world that have republished their articles. Hopefully Reddit won't ban them all. Source: over 3 years ago
Qwant.com is a good one as well as swisscows.com. They are both located in Europe (France and Switzerland) and I am happy with their results. Are they the best ? It depends on your use case I guess. Source: over 3 years ago

Swisscows, a private search engine headquartered in Switzerland, has continued to create a distinct niche in the expansive landscape of privacy-focused search engines. This engine prides itself on delivering robust user privacy by eliminating tracking, which has become a hallmark in an industry dominated by data collection. Positioned as a significant competitor alongside DuckDuckGo, StartPage, and others, Swisscows' primarily distinguishes itself through its commitment to family-friendly content and semantic search technology.
A key draw to Swisscows is its strong emphasis on privacy, underpinned by its zero-tracking policy. Unlike some competitors that rely on tracking technologies to personalize ads or search results, Swisscows does not collect or store any user data. This focus appeals particularly to privacy-conscious users wary of ubiquitous data surveillance practices spotlighted by revelations like the Snowden files. Additionally, its location in Switzerland further underpins its commitment to privacy, leveraging the country's stringent data protection laws.
Swisscows offers automatic filtering of violent and pornographic content, which serves as both a strength and a potential limitation depending on the user's needs. By default, it promotes Safe Search, making it particularly appealing to families and educational settings where accessing explicit content is a concern. This feature positions Swisscows uniquely compared to other private search engines that do not implement such automatic filtering mechanisms.
Distinguishing itself with semantic search capabilities, Swisscows leverages AI and machine learning to provide contextually relevant search results. This semantic approach enriches user queries with a network of related search terms and suggestions, which some users find helpful for exploring topics in more depth. The "semantic map" functionality presents a visual grid of related keywords alongside search results, enhancing the overall search experience by providing quick access to pertinent information and encouraging broader exploration of topics.
Swisscows, like several other alternative search engines, utilizes Bing for search indices. While this ensures a broad and reliable source of information, it also positions Swisscows as more of a frontend metasearch engine, rather than an entity with its independent crawler. This strategic choice aligns with those users whose primary concern is privacy over independence from major search infrastructure providers.
Public sentiment reflects positively on Swisscows for its privacy features and family-friendly approach. However, there are mentions of frustration with its reliance on Bing's index, as some users prefer search engines with proprietary crawling capabilities to enhance result diversity. Users who prioritize minimal tracking and a focus on non-explicit content herald Swisscows as a viable alternative to mainstream search engines like Google.
Swisscows carves out a distinct role as a privacy-centric search engine that caters specifically to safety-conscious users. Its focus on omitting explicit content while providing privacy features differentiates it in a competitive field. While the reliance on Bing's index may be a point of contention for some, Swisscows remains a trusted choice for those looking to maintain privacy without sacrificing search quality.
