  • Show HN: Glossarie – a new, immersive way to learn a language
Hey a little later to the party here but I'm really enjoying this. I started reading a book with it and while I agree with others it's not great for grammar it certainly shows me many new words without requiring me to read at a glacial pace. PS: You should def try to include some books from https://standardebooks.org/ which are much nicer formatted than the ones you're using from Project Gutenberg. Good luck and I... - Source: Hacker News / about 1 month ago
  • Can odsp check your bank account if they feel like it?
As an aside, for anyone looking for free classic books to read on their various eReaders, these are very well done: https://standardebooks.org. Source: 5 months ago
  • Conversion from epub to kepub, and related Calibre use
It is the same when you download a kepub book from standardebooks.org. You will have the epub file with kepub features. Source: 5 months ago
  • Conversion from epub to kepub, and related Calibre use
Now I have also just sideloaded a free ebook offered by Standard Ebooks, which provide kepub versions of its catalogue. They recommend the following :. Source: 5 months ago
  • It is important that ebooks be sold without DRM
    > https://standardebooks.org/ Standard Ebooks is seriously impressive. One of my favorite sources of books in the public domain. I’d also add in addition to this excellent list of DRM-free ebooks, it’s always worth looking into borrowing a book from the library via Libby/Overdrive. - Source: Hacker News / 6 months ago
  • The Project Gutenberg Open Audiobook Collection
Standard Ebooks has the ability to filter books bu reading level. That seems much better for people trying to learn English. https://standardebooks.org/ They carefully curate and copy-edit their books, and go for quality over quantity. I think that is probably the right choice. We already have free access to an effectively infinite amount of mediocre content on the internet. - Source: Hacker News / 8 months ago
  • Kindle AND books?
I use my kindle for reading all of the free classics on Project Gutenberg and Standard EBooks. I also buy the occasional short story collection on Amazon and use my kindle for those. I always have a physical book, kindle book and audiobook going all at the same time. Physical book is main book and for heavier or more serious reads whereas audiobooks are my popcorn books and fun stuff. Kindle is everything in... Source: 10 months ago
  • reading e books
As far as where to find quality ebooks, check out Standard Ebooks. They have over 800 super high-quality digital versions of books from the public domain that you can read on their site or download for free. Source: 10 months ago
  • Free ebooks
Https://www.gutenberg.org/, https://standardebooks.org/, https://www.fadedpage.com/index.php and a number of others. You won't find any recent bestsellers but there's enough classic literature to last a lifetime. Also check out your local library. Source: 10 months ago
  • Found my way out of a reading slump!
If you like classic literature, there are hundreds of free ebooks available on sites like the Gutenberg Project, https://standardebooks.org/ and others. Source: 10 months ago
  • The paperwhite kindle is about $100 on amazon right now, not sure if it's worth buying
I recommend Standard eBooks in place of Project Gutenberg, the books are much cleaner and better formatted. Source: 11 months ago
  • New to kindle
Download classic/public domain ebooks for free on Standard eBooks. Their books are already in azw3 formst. Source: 11 months ago
  • Reddit seems to have forgotten why websites provide a free API
And lastly, consider your target. For example, I used to have a little scrapping tool for StandardEbooks. They're a small, little-known project. I have no idea how their stack looks like, but I assume they didn't have supercomputers running that site, at least back in the day. These guys do lots of thankless job to give away quality products for free. So you're damned right I checked their robots.txt before doing... Source: 11 months ago
  • Downloading books?
Standard eBooks hosts free public domain ebooks, many of which are sourced from Project Gutenberg. However, these books have been intensively cleaned up and are generally superior to their Project Gutenberg sources. Source: 11 months ago
  • EPUB File on Mac to Kindle
If not, you can download free books legally from https://www.gutenberg.org/ or https://standardebooks.org/. Source: 11 months ago
  • Any Real-World Books Put Onto AO3?
There's also Standard EBooks. It's a smaller selection than Project Gutenberg but text, formatting and, in some cases, the translation has been improved over what PG offers. Plus you get nifty ebook covers., instead of the bland defaults like on PG. Source: 12 months ago
  • Anyone else here finding themselves liking older/classic literature more?
Several few weeks ago I discovered Standard eBooks, which has quite a number of public domain novels in both kindle and kobo formats, as well as plain epub. I've since downloaded fifty or so, and have finished reading 3 of them: Jane Eyre / Brönte Elmer Gantry / Lewis Sister Carrie / Dreiser. Source: 12 months ago
  • any EPUB with all Clark Ashton Smith stories and poems?
If you're putting together your own, perhaps you'd consider reaching out to Standard eBooks to see if they're interested in obtaining it. If everything you gather is in the public domain, that would make for an exciting addition to their collection. Source: 12 months ago
  • In case you didn't know, you can report typos found in Project Gutenberg ebooks via email
Project Gutenberg is a wonderful source for free public domain ebooks—their library is huge, and their ebook formatting has majorly improved from the days of Courier font and no chapter/page numbers (though they're not quite as nice as my favorite public domain ebook site, Standard Ebooks). Source: 12 months ago
  • Where do you all purchase your ebooks that aren't from Amazon?
I check them out from the library, and I also love fadedpage.com and standardebooks.org. Source: 12 months ago
  • What are some ways to get ebooks at cheaper rates in India ?
If you're looking for something even cheaper, there are free books on project gutenberg and standard ebooks (same books as project gutenberg but not as many, however they come with better formatting and covers and whatnot). Source: 12 months ago
