  I use my kindle for reading all of the free classics on Project Gutenberg and Standard EBooks. I also buy the occasional short story collection on Amazon and use my kindle for those. I always have a physical book, kindle book and audiobook going all at the same time. I have no idea how their stack looks like, but I assume they didn't have supercomputers running that site, at least back in the day.   Several few weeks ago I discovered Standard eBooks, which has quite a number of public domain novels in both kindle and kobo formats, as well as plain epub.   Project Gutenberg is a wonderful source for free public domain ebooks—their library is huge, and their ebook formatting has majorly improved from the days of Courier font and no chapter/page numbers (though they're not quite as nice as my favorite public domain ebook site, Standard Ebooks).
