Was it 2D or 3D? Topdown or First person? Do you remember what the objective was? The first game that comes to mind that mostly fits this description is Space Station 13. Source: about 1 year ago
I think it's down right now and they're working in improving it, but that would give you ample time to learn the Space Station 13 it runs on if you really really want to. Source: about 1 year ago
Space Station 13 is... interesting. It's certainly unique. https://spacestation13.com/. Source: over 1 year ago

Mandatory Space Station 13 comment https://spacestation13.com. Prolly sank over 1.5k hours in this game, will definitely be doubling that amount. Will probably run on 2 lemons and a transistor, plus its free and open source (the only cost being your sanity). Source: over 1 year ago
It's still going! Space Station 13 runs on it! Source: almost 2 years ago

2D space station with hidden roles, objectives, and a traitor. Space Station 13 did it ages ago. Source: over 2 years ago
What's funny is that I immediately thought, "I can play D&D with you right now." on Space Station 13. In Space Station 13 ( https://spacestation13.com ), which has graphics, but also typing for chat, you are aboard a space station (duh) and you can actually just go to a lounge or library in the game and play D&D. Of course antagonists like giant Spiders, cultists, and the Syndicate may try to blow up the station... Source: almost 3 years ago
In my Space Station 13 game the roles are very complex and interactive, there is a captain and heads of staff played by real people who command a crew played by real people. Source: about 3 years ago
I'd also argue that there are some mid-budget indies like The Desperados series which are also immersive-sims. And even SpaceStation13 is one as well, with the difference of it being online. Source: about 3 years ago
I haven't actually played it myself but it sounds like space station 13 might be what you're looking for. It's multiplayer based so the gameplay loop is entirely different but from what I can tell it has depth similar to that of rimworld and dwarf fortress. Source: about 3 years ago
