First, use apps like Soosee and sites like Vegan Friendly to double check things. Unfortunately, animal products can be found in the most unlikely of places (including ordinary bread, if you live in the US). There are vegan alternatives, thankfully. Source: almost 2 years ago

A redditor made an app for this! Soosee allows you to select your allergies from a list of common ones, then scan an ingredient list to look for those words in other languages. Very useful for reading packaging! Source: about 3 years ago
