  • Starlink Space Laser throughput details published
It's absolutely incredibly small, think of how large the surface area of a sphere of LEO and the surface area of these lasers linking the vertices of the 5,289 satellites. The gaps between them are probably hundreds of kilometres. I would imagine that each link has multiple routes so if there was a failure traffic can still be routed in the same way the Internet has many routes. https://satellitemap.space is... - Source: Hacker News / 4 months ago
  • lights in northeast Oklahoma.
Did you check https://satellitemap.space/ and https://flightradar24.com/ to rule out commercial air and space traffic? Source: 5 months ago
  • Anyone know what this is?
Next time you see something strange, there are some good resources you can check immediately: https://satellitemap.space/ https://www.flightradar24.com/ those two sites are free and easy to use and are a great tool to rule out satellites and declared air traffic. This is an interesting sighting, it would have been neat to get more detail, closer zoom, full recording, exact timing, lat/lon, and/or multiple... Source: 5 months ago

  • SpaceX projected 20M Starlink users by 2022–it ended up with 1M
Starlink is very cool tech but it will always be a rather niche service given most people live in cities. Looking at https://satellitemap.space/ they currently have about 8 satellites over California. Each is basically a cell tower in the sky. Napa, CA has a population of about 80K and 135 antenna towers registered with the FCC. https://www.city-data.com/towers/cell-Napa-California.html So even when they 10x the... - Source: Hacker News / 8 months ago
  • Diving into Starlink's User Terminal Firmware
Here's a live map of the constellation that also shows ground stations: https://satellitemap.space/ SpaceX has been developing sat to sat links, but in the current system a majority of traffic just goes up and down like a bent pipe. However because of the speed the sats move the system needs to know the location of all endpoints in real time. A given sat is only visible to a base station for something like 90... - Source: Hacker News / 9 months ago
