  • SpaceX wants to launch 100k more Starlink satellites โ€“ for 100x the bandwidth
No, just no make them pre-pay a multi-trillion cleanup and cancer fund for all the toxic waste, not just the launches but pollution burning up in the atmosphere * https://https://satellitemap.space/ * https://www.bloomberg.com/graphics/2025-space-orbit-satellites-pollution/. - Source: Hacker News / about 1 month ago
  • No more than 100 000 faint satellites should orbit Earth
Too late https://satellitemap.space there are already several starlink competitors and even other countries planning to launch their own 1000-10,000 node networks. - Source: Hacker News / about 2 months ago
  • Telescope Ranchers
Sadly won't be possible for anything serious next decade as each space trillionaire and country launches their own 10,000+ constellations sky will be constantly twinkling, will be weird we'll have to switch to space telescopes above LEO https://satellitemap.space. - Source: Hacker News / 2 months ago
  • Amazon to Acquire Globalstar and Expand Amazon Leo Satellite Network
Are we going to be able to see the night sky by the end of this decade? https://satellitemap.space And what's the effect on cancer rates, etc. From all that toxic pollution to both launch the satellites and then vaporize them in the atmosphere years later? https://bloomberg.com/graphics/2025-space-orbit-satellites-pollution Sure would be nice if the answers to these questions were not guessing before we do the... - Source: Hacker News / 4 months ago
  • Starlink roam 50GB is now 100GB with unlimited slow speed after that
    >There are distinct large latency spikes every 30ish minutes, which I think is due to the dish switching between different satellites. The satellites are in Low Earth Orbit and zipping across the sky at an extremely high rate of speed. If you were in the middle of absolutely flat nowhere-land, you could maybe get a few minutes on a single satellite before it goes over the horizon, not 30 minutes.... - Source: Hacker News / 7 months ago
  • Starlink roam 50GB is now 100GB with unlimited slow speed after that
    - I live relatively far north (~65N) and starlink's network isn't biased toward polar orbiting satellites, so my coverage probaby isn't representative of behavior further south. You can see a map of satellites and note the relatively poor arctic and subarctic region coverage here: https://satellitemap.space/. - Source: Hacker News / 7 months ago
  • Every Satellite Orbiting Earth and Who Owns Them
Https://satellitemap.space/ This puts the scale in perspective. Zoom in and almost all the LEO satellites appear to be a Starlink. - Source: Hacker News / about 1 year ago
  • Tesla sales drop for fifth month in a row in Europe
When that nightmare budget bill is pushed through next week and they replace EV credits with coal mine subsidies, Tesla sales will crater in US too If only we could solve starlink pollution as easily but privatize the profits, socialize the costs https://satellitemap.space/. - Source: Hacker News / about 1 year ago
  • Aircraft Detection at Planetary Scale
Their current best satellite in the constellation is the SuperDove and it takes images ~637 sq km at a time so, as a naive calculation, to cover the whole earth at any single instant you'd need over 800 thousand of Planet's SuperDove ignoring the difficulty of making a constellation that efficient and ignoring that you can also save a lot of birds by confining the area of interest to a narrower band of latitude... - Source: Hacker News / over 1 year ago
  • Internet shutdowns at record high in Africa as access 'weaponised'
    > Tracking satellites is computationally intensive Is it? I've seen a guy doing it by hand with a YAGI antenna and a little handled radio. But I could see it for many and the phased part. Also people have web models like this one showing the orbits. https://satellitemap.space/ Anyway yeah just mental exercise not really arguing for it. - Source: Hacker News / over 1 year ago
  • A Hexagonal-tiled Cartogram for U.S. Counties
Starlink's availability map uses hexagons, but you likely mean https://satellitemap.space/. - Source: Hacker News / over 1 year ago
  • Engineering for Slow Internet
I still think engineering for slow internet is really important, and massively under appreciated by most software developers, but ... LEO systems (like Starlink, especially StarLink) essentially solve the core problems now. I did an Arctic transit (Alaska to Norway) in the summer of 2023, and we could make FaceTime video calls from the ship, despite cloud cover, being quite far from land. The polar coverage... - Source: Hacker News / about 2 years ago
  • What the damaged Svalbard cable looked like when it came up from the depths
You can look at the https://satellitemap.space/ to see that starlink isn't (yet) too feasible in the northern/arctic areas. Even in the Nordic countries the connections are not that great. - Source: Hacker News / about 2 years ago
  • Real-time map of every Starlink satellite in orbit
This one has been around for ages, and it does work on mobile too. https://satellitemap.space/. - Source: Hacker News / over 2 years ago
  • Live Starlink Constellation and Map
Some fun things I spotted: - https://satellitemap.space/?constellation=starlink&norad=59207 is rising, started recently? - There's one over Africa that says re-entry in 30 minutes. - Source: Hacker News / over 2 years ago
  • Real-time map of every Starlink satellite in orbit
I prefer https://satellitemap.space/ You can see the base station locations there, which is helpful in visualizing how the system works in various locales. - Source: Hacker News / over 2 years ago
  • Starlink will soon be able to connect normal smartphones to the open internet
You can see a realtime map here. It looks similar to me. https://satellitemap.space/?constellation=starlink. - Source: Hacker News / over 2 years ago
  • Starlink Space Laser throughput details published
It's absolutely incredibly small, think of how large the surface area of a sphere of LEO and the surface area of these lasers linking the vertices of the 5,289 satellites. The gaps between them are probably hundreds of kilometres. I would imagine that each link has multiple routes so if there was a failure traffic can still be routed in the same way the Internet has many routes. https://satellitemap.space is... - Source: Hacker News / over 2 years ago

Did you check https://satellitemap.space/ and https://flightradar24.com/ to rule out commercial air and space traffic? Source: over 2 years ago
  • Anyone know what this is?
Next time you see something strange, there are some good resources you can check immediately: https://satellitemap.space/ https://www.flightradar24.com/ those two sites are free and easy to use and are a great tool to rule out satellites and declared air traffic. This is an interesting sighting, it would have been neat to get more detail, closer zoom, full recording, exact timing, lat/lon, and/or multiple... Source: over 2 years ago
