  • Slack is extorting us with a $195k/yr bill increase
I would recommend that people stop taking this kind of bait, especially as an organization. Discord is free for now but that's bound to change and you can't have any expectation of privacy there. In my eyes they're practically the poster child for an organization who could (and arguably should) be running their own solution on their own servers. Perhaps self-hosted Revolt Chat [1] which I've been keeping an eye on... - Source: Hacker News / 14 days ago
  • Path to a free self-taught education in Computer Science
I like Matrix but unfortunately it has major stability issues. The GrapheneOS project moved most of their chat over to Discord after their Matrix community got nuked twice. They still maintain a Matrix community which is bridged to their Discord instance, but most users are on the Discord side of the fence. IMHO, Revolt is a better FOSS Discord alternative: https://revolt.chat/. Relatively young project, but they... - Source: Hacker News / 4 months ago
  • Mark Zuckerberg Says Social Media Is Over
Really makes you wonder if/when Discord goes IPO, that Meta would buy a controlling stake in it? Fortunately there are open source alternatives even if they aren't as popular as Discord at the moment, such as Revolt Chat: https://revolt.chat/ I miss the days of self-hosted forums; sadly it seems that algorithms, and the need to satisfy the need for 'instant' connection/information are ruining forums for young... - Source: Hacker News / 5 months ago

  • Gaming chat platform Discord in early talks with banks about public listing
I work on Revolt[1], which is an open-source chat platform very similar to Discord. I wonder if we should expect another huge influx soon... [1]: https://revolt.chat. - Source: Hacker News / 7 months ago
  • Discord has been using ML to determine the gender and age of some of its users
The beginning of enshitification of discord (while 100% expected) for some reason hits harder then any other service I've used throughout all these years. It has entirely replaced social media for me. It just felt more organic to me then anything else. So... Since I've heard about the ads coming to discord, and I have looked into alternatives. They do exist, in varying quality, and there are programs for some of... - Source: Hacker News / over 1 year ago
  • Discord is nuking Nintendo Switch emulator devs and their entire servers
Good time to remind everyone that an open source E2EE decentralized alternative exists for Discord in the form of https://revolt.chat/. - Source: Hacker News / over 1 year ago
  • Discord is nuking Nintendo Switch emulator devs and their entire servers
Yeah I've been using them for my indie conferences since 2020. I recently argued [0] that it's not the Year for Matrix, even if Discord now has ads and is doing sketchy stuff typical of enshitification. Unfortunately, I don't see their priorities going towards UX. I'm dropping them. Revolt has promise [1], at the very least as a stopgap. • Best alternative?
I haven't looked in to or tried it let due to still having his migraine and nausea the new UI gave me this morning, but just ran across Revolt in another post. Source: almost 2 years ago
  • They're not gonna listen
I would highly suggest checking out Revolt (found here: https://revolt.chat/), it's still under somewhat heavy development but it's already a million times better than discord in its current state with existing features and planned features. Source: almost 2 years ago
  • Discord will switch to temporary file links to block malware delivery
If you're looking for the closest open source alternative to Discord, Revolt is is the best alternative that you can self host. https://revolt.chat https://github.com/revoltchat. - Source: Hacker News / almost 2 years ago
  • Unlocking Discord Nitro Features for Free
I used gtkcord4, and I didn't get banned. I used Vencord, didn't get banned either. Of course, I wouldn't reccommend using any of these for the saftey of your account, as I was dumb back then and never learned about the risks. --- Also, one Discord alternative I would reccommend is Revolt[1]. Great community, and was famous for being featured in a No Text To Speech video (and my friend's server had a brief cameo... - Source: Hacker News / about 2 years ago
  • iโ€™m curious, is anyone else using the pronouns slot like a mini bio?
Wouldn't be that big of an issue if they put more than 2 seconds of thought into it. I'm part of the team at Revolt and we're in the process of building a proper pronoun system instead of a half assed extra text field. Source: about 2 years ago
  • Alternatives List
Revolt is good alternative to discord users that wants to switch another platform. Also, Revolt is open source. Source: about 2 years ago
  • Revolt isn't actually (fully) open source
In terms of your specific examples: * Telemetry is quite broad and I'm not sure what you mean exactly. We have basic (GDPR-compliant) analytics on https://revolt.chat itself and nowhere else. To list servers / bots on Discover, the message volume is calculated for each. * We don't and that's a pretty serious accusation. You can (currently) audit the limited admin panel available. I came across Revolt this week and so far it seems like the strongest open source Discord competitor to date. I have not had an opportunity to play around with it myself though amongst everything else going on. Does anyone have experience already on this platform? How does it compare to Discord? I will be testing it out this weekend when I get a chance. Source: over 2 years ago
