  • Show HN: Driftmania – an open source PICO-8 racing game
Nice work, gives me very Micro Machines vibes for the NES. The only thing I don't like about PICO-8 is that its completely closed source. An open source alternative that seems very promising is Pyxel. It has similar retro / pixel art limitations, a built-in sprite editor, music tracker, etc. https://github.com/kitao/pyxel. - Source: Hacker News / 2 months ago
  • is python good for making games?
There's also game engines which are fun to use in python, like pyxel. Source: about 1 year ago
  • Web App Generation Feature Added to Pyxel, a Retro Game Engine for Python

  • Is PyGame worth using?
It's fine. You might also enjoy working with Pyxel, which is a little more pixellated and fun and not exactly "classically production ready" either. (I mean, games like Papers, Please could be programmed in Pygame, but that's about it). Source: about 1 year ago
  • Python Alternative to Pygame similar to LÖVE ?
PySDL2(lower level than Love) and Pyxel(more like PICO-8 but scripted with Python). Source: over 1 year ago
  • Game Engine written in Python! Feedback welcome :)
Couldn't a lot of the processing be handled in c/rust and python would just "talk" to it? That would drastically speed up performance. That's what pyxel does. Source: over 1 year ago
  • Any open source games written in Python? Ideally, something being actively developed
I've been really stoked about the game engine Pyxel lately. Not the right choice for expansive games that you can release on Steam to make big bucks. But for hobbyist who want to start out, it's tremendous. There are loads of open-sourced games made with Pyxel to learn from. Source: over 1 year ago
  • MicroPython officially becomes part of the Arduino ecosystem
I'm pretty sure you have to use lua with PICO-8, last I looked at it there wasn't a way to plug in your own language. You could look at TIC-80 and WASM with micropython compiling to WASM (or even full python). Or... Just use a python tool inspired by PICO-8: https://github.com/kitao/pyxel. - Source: Hacker News / over 1 year ago
  • Sunday Daily Thread: What's everyone working on this week?
Just discovered Pyxel, a retro game engine, in another thread on this sub, and it's fantastic! Source: over 1 year ago

Hey, consider doing this in pyxel since chess is so visually simple, and you say it doesn't need to look amazing; it is a joy to work with. Source: almost 2 years ago
  • Teacher in need of advice
Pyxel is a really cool tool for making pixel games. It's a bit limited in its distribution and graphical capabilities, but ceratinly worth a look! It ships with a super-simple music editor and graphics editor. Source: almost 2 years ago
  • Is PICO-8 available for cheap somewhere?
I've never used it but I've read good things about Pyxel https://github.com/kitao/pyxel. Source: over 2 years ago

  • Creative coding with Replit
Pyxel is specialised for making retro-type games, inspired by console games from the 80s and early 90s. You can only display 16 colors, and no more than 4 sound samples can be played at once, just like on the earlier Nintendo, Sega, and other classic games systems. If you're into pixel art, this is the game engine for you. - Source: dev.to / over 2 years ago
  • Python is awesome!
My suggestion for a project is to just play around with pyxel. Source: over 2 years ago
