  I feel like Progress Quest from 2002 is the spiritual predecessor of the clicker genre: http://progressquest.com/ In that it distills the game mechanic of “make number go up” into a simplistic form. It just lakes the clicking. PS, whenever I relapse and play too much World of Warcraft, I play some Cookie Clicker as a cleanse to remind myself of the fundamental pointlessness of the whole endeavor.   Would you say that Progress Quest and World of Warcraft are basically the same game? You still go out and collect loot/gear to level up and fight stronger monsters and get better gear.   Yes. IIRC it was just a copy of 2.0 at first with the full automation, then later the name was changed to "Quest" when people pointed out that it was more like Progress Quest. Source: about 2 years ago

  Someone made a game without grind. Everything is automated. Your computer plays for you while you're AFK or working on your computer, sorts through the loot it collects, keeps the best stuff and sells the rest, and keeps you updated on its status. You don't have to do anything. You can just watch while it plays. Or let it play and check in on it from time to time. Source: about 2 years ago

  Progress Quest. It just levels your character up over time, you don't interact with it, the game literally plays itself in the background. In my defense, I was using a Windows 2000 workstation at the time and I wanted to see just how long I could keep a consistent uptime. I think my record was 1 year, 122 days if I'm remembering right.
