  • Good tools to recover/repair computers for usb?
I have PortableAppsloaded on a thumbdrive. It's like a mini OS that allows you to launch a lot of different programs without having them installed on a computer. I have apps like HijackThis, Kaspersky TDSSKiller, McAfee Stinger, and a lot of other utilities loaded on it. It's come in handy multiple times when someone visits a website they shouldn't have. You can also load your e-mail & internet browser... - Source: Reddit / 9 days ago
  • How can I free up space when I literally have nothing downloaded? I have a trash HP Stream laptop that only came with 32GB. I have nothing downloaded and I can’t update Windows because I’m low on space. What should I do?
Yep, soldered-in eMMC flash storage. HP should never have been allowed to sell those with 32 GB of storage after 8.1, and even that was barely enough. Hell, they're selling them now with 64 GB eMMC & Windows 11, and that's barely enough. It's a borderline criminal ripoff. You'll have to download a Windows 10 ISO and make a bootable flash drive with Rufus, and do a clean install of Windows 10, and then use the SD... - Source: Reddit / 11 days ago
  • Virus blocks me from installing antivirus
Assuming windows you can go to https://portableapps.com/ and from another machine and install the app on a flash drive and install an antivirus program. - Source: Reddit / 13 days ago
  • Windows' universal binary compatibility is not admired enough
In Windows, you can keep a folder full of portable versions of apps along with their config. You can get portable versions for a huge variety of apps, including almost every open source one, and for software that doesn't offer a native portable version there's portableapps.com. These app versions can be updated easily, or you can just keep what works. And then it can be synced to any pc you want and everything is... - Source: Reddit / 15 days ago

  • Any experience with Plover (stenography)?
It is the Linux equivalent to the format of programs on portableapps.com for Windows. Eventually, the software will run even without a permanent installation into the operating system (hence it is invisible to synaptic or other apt package manager interface). - Source: Reddit / about 1 month ago
  • Portable virus scanner with offline virus patterns
It's been years since I've used it, but you might try https://portableapps.com/. It's not an separate OS like a Linux Live USB, but you can persistently update software once it is up and running, and you can just move it from machine to machine if you like. I am not 100% up to date with the licensing on that, so I don't know about commercial usage (if that kind of thing bothers you). - Source: Reddit / about 1 month ago
  • If the world was ending, what documents would you protect to save humanity?

  • Recommendations for software to install a bunch of .exe and .msi on a fresh copy of windows without internet access.
This is somewhat confusing. If you have the program installers on a flash drive, you don't need the internet to install them. Perhaps you're talking about the PortableApps launcher on a flash drive? - Source: Reddit / 2 months ago

  • Is the hope for my older MacBook?
This is being written on a 2011 iMac which I'll use until it dies since I use it primarily for it's large screen in editing images and using to display reference images for painting. So far, Pages and similar Mac apps still work, but when/if they no longer do, I'll be using LibreOffice and/or OpenOffice myself. There are also portable apps that run from a USB stick: https://portableapps.com. - Source: Reddit / 4 months ago
