Rundown of the situation: The keyholder of the github repo of Polymc has gone rogue, sabotaging the project's github repo and discord server by removing everyone else's permissions after stating his strong, negative opinions towards gay and trans people, causing a lot of understandable backlash, with the majority of the team moving onto a new project, PrismLauncher Because of the fact that this dev has gone... I use the PolyMC launcher, it allows you to install modloaders, mods and modpacks straight from the launcher without needing to open your browser. It also will automatically display available mod versions that are available for your modloader and game version and is very convenient. Source: over 1 year ago
I like both GDLauncher and PolyMC, but I haven't played much Minecraft since Overwolf bought Curse and made it significantly harder for 3rd party launchers to download packs, so it's possible that it's more difficult to use them these days. Source: over 1 year ago
(Also I’ve found that PolyMC runs faster than the CurseForge client, and can pull from more launchers). Source: over 1 year ago

For mods for helping I suggest Fabric (and please please use PolyMC not normal launcher) with optimisation mods and a cool mod called Command Macros that allows you to keybind a command for faster execution (quite useful for developing dimension for quick tp or changing gamemodes or data of mobs). Since the version of Proton (GE) can be configured on a per-game basis, it will have no effect on your MC mods. You shouldn't even need Proton to run the Java version of MC. I haven't tried it myself yet, but I've seen people say the best way to run MC on SD is using PolyMC. Source: over 1 year ago
If you don't want to try anything complex, polymc is a fork of multimc and should work. Source: over 1 year ago

If you're not already, I would highly recommend using a mod manager like PolyMC, which will give you a nice GUI for checking all the things you'll need to troubleshoot. Source: over 1 year ago
You can try using PolyMC, which is a fork of MultiMC that supports importing Curseforge packs as well as a built in mod browser. You can just specify it to use the MultiMC install folder so you can keep all of your current instances without moving anything. However, when installing a pack, the mods that have third party downloads disabled will have to be downloaded manually, and you will be prompted to do. Source: over 1 year ago
