  • OpenVPN selfhosted
JFTR, OpenVPN Access Server comes with 2 simultaneously connected devices for free. To have more devices connected at the same time you need a paid subscription. There is also an alternative, to use a "cloud managed OpenVPN server", where you only deploy clients, this is called CloudConnexa; this allows 3 devices connected at the same time for free. • So... can we have Proton Visionary come back to celebrate Bill C-11 passing in Canada?
If you want to have a bit easier setup, you could look into CloudConnexa by OpenVPN Inc. The free plan includes 3 simultaneously connections. You would still need a VPS host somewhere (which has a very easy setup against CloudConnexa). This VPS would take one of these connections - so you can have 2 additional devices connected at the same time. However, if needing more devices it can get more costly again. Source: about 1 year ago
  • Using OpenVPN instead of port forwarding to reach systems in my LAN - how hard is this?
If you don't have many clients needing to be connected at the same time; it might be quicker and easier to just setup a free OpenVPN CloudConnexa (former OpenVPN Cloud) account; it allows 3 devices being connected at the same time (for more clients, it will carry a cost). You get configs generated by this service to just install on each of your "nodes", which all just need to run OpenVPN as a client. Source: about 1 year ago
