Download onxy for Mac, https://titanium-software.fr/en/onyx.html use it to clear your caches etc and check your space after. Source: 10 months ago
If you absolutely must, Onyx IMO is the way to go. (Maybe the caches, but forget about "freeing memory" - let the OS handle RAM.). Source: 10 months ago
Also, toss in the control key [ ⌘⇧⌃4 ] if you want it to go straight into your clipboard (with or without your spacebar for the window selection). Which can be awesome for pasting into a document or email and not having to worry about having the file filling up the folder where you keep all your other screen captures. AND, if you want to edit that, you can do so via a terminal command or the onyx app (which easily... Source: 11 months ago

Download and install Onyx for Big Sur (https://titanium-software.fr/en/onyx.html - Onyx versions are specific to each OS and only work with their designated OS). It’s a hidden setting you can change with the terminal. Or even easier with the utility Onyx. https://titanium-software.fr/en/onyx.html. Source: over 1 year ago
It’s been aggressively marketed and in doing so, has created a bit of a reputation for being scammy. It also doesn’t help that it’s functionality is duplicated by a number of freeware tools that often work better. Additionally, some of the maintenance it offers are actually baked into MacOS itself. You can use the Onyx app for instance. There is an option to reindex spotlight. Source: almost 2 years ago
If you do not want to futz around too much manually, install the correct version of Onyx for your macOS version and run its cleanups. Source: about 2 years ago

OnyX is freeware. Easy way to access maintenance scripts. Source: about 2 years ago
