I used to be able to add search engines from Mycroft and from context menu on a search box within a website, and assign a keyword. When using this keyword on the search/URL bar, the icon of the search engine appears and I can add the terms to search. Source: about 2 years ago

In 1st case, sites have to use OpenSearch search engine to make it appear as a search engine. Most of the sites won't use that [Including reddit] There is a work around site called Mycroft Project. Would Mozilla need permission from a search engine to display a link to a search engine and to offer up an OpenSearch install of the engine? I don't know - that isn't really clear to me.
