It's vital you go into cellular setting and turn off all the data sucking services / apps. I like maps.me for offline maps and as said google offline maps are good. There is also a low data mode on iOS. - Source: Reddit / 2 days ago
Get the app maps.me. It doesn't require internet or data and works with offline maps. It's great for navigation, especially for walking. - Source: Reddit / 4 days ago
Yeah I checked out Organic Maps, I'll definitely be using that instead of maps.me, but the topo maps are still kind of painful. - Source: Reddit / 8 days ago
Maps.meamazing . works on GPS so no internet needed when one is deep in the Amazon, remote beaches in Mexico, the Canadian rockies or anywhere in Montana :). - Source: Reddit / 8 days ago
I'd figure out the heightprofile of your hike figured out.. Apps like maps.me and even google maps I think will show this to you when you select 'walking' for the find a trip option. - Source: Reddit / 8 days ago
I've heard good things about maps.me and Here We Go. Google maps can now do some offline stuff, but make sure you try it before you need it. Here We Go needs you to download the Aruba map for offline use. - Source: Reddit / 12 days ago
You might consider an offline-maps app. I use Guru Maps (subscription required; can load your own route). There's also Maps.me -- I'm not sure whether it can let you load routes. In either case, having offline maps can be very useful in a pinch, so I recommend one or the other (or something similar) regardless. - Source: Reddit / 12 days ago
Funny that you mention it, maps used to be "the last of the apps" for me, the only one that I thought was still too good to pass up. Then it got worse. And worse. Now I use maps.me (I'm sure there are others as well) and I don't miss it. - Source: Reddit / 12 days ago
I used maps.me for my first camino because I didn't have an international plan on my phone. No data required, it uses the phone's GPS and internally stored maps. Even had listings for most of the albergues built in. Even if you have an international plan with data, it's great for areas where you don't have any coverage. - Source: Reddit / 13 days ago
I use Sygic and maps.me in China. Baidu maps is quite horrible (although accurate), but there's another Chinese one that's pretty goo,d, but I forget it's name. - Source: Reddit / 17 days ago
Final recommendations: I’d recommend the iOverlander app to find hotels, cafes, cell phone stores, etc. In Sudan. There isn’t a whole lot on Google Maps or maps.me, so in many cases iOverlander might have the most robust or up-to-date information. Also, though many people speak English in Sudan, Google Translate was sometimes helpful in a pinch (we downloaded it for offline usage). - Source: Reddit / 19 days ago
Thanks for the tip, I'll probs rent a motorbike & use google maps for nav mainly, if no internet, I'll use "maps.me" 👍. - Source: Reddit / 19 days ago
Google maps is just fine, but I'd advise you to have a permanent usb power source on your bike to keep the phone charged, and to download some offline maps in case you have no signal. The offline maps app can be pretty much anything, as you'd only use it as a backup and ride most of the time with google. I personally have maps.me for it. - Source: Reddit / 22 days ago
Pre-download apps for foreign currency exchange, translation, etc. Depending on where you are going. Get some maps.me on your phone for places where you might have a tough time getting around without service. - Source: Reddit / 28 days ago
You would need an offline maps program, I uses maps.me, and then you have to download some maps for it. - Source: Reddit / about 1 month ago
WiFi is pretty accessible, I'd get some offline maps app (e.g. maps.me) as a backup if you're stranded. Pretty sure apple maps will have transit information, I don't know if wechat/alipay let you add foreign cards by now, but if so, it's a useful feature to have. In the past I've always grabbed a sim card, but clearly that's not an option with the iPhone 14. - Source: Reddit / about 1 month ago
For navigation, I used maps.me. The trail is marked fairly ok, I just got lost once on day 1 ;). - Source: Reddit / about 1 month ago
That is why I don’t trust Google Maps. I use maps.me instead. - Source: Reddit / about 2 months ago
I don't drive but use https://maps.me/ for offline navigation. It's based on openstreetmap. If I were you, I'd download multiple apps and see what works best for you in Iceland. - Source: Reddit / 2 months ago
This will show up on supporting apps such as OrganicMaps or Maps.me in a month or two in their next map update for Laos, or the one following. - Source: Reddit / 2 months ago
Google maps was very reliable and we had coverage (t-mobile) for the vast majority of the trip. I also had maps.me downloaded which worked well in the cities, but didn’t seem to pick up well on the F roads. I wouldn’t depend on maps.me as your sole form of navigation. - Source: Reddit / 2 months ago
