  • I'm over my device limit and want to install Dropbox on a new Mac so I can download my files to a thumb drive. The Install won't complete unless I upgrade my account. How can I copy my online Dropbox to my thumb drive?
Also, since you're on a mac, you can use https://maestral.app/ which bypasses the limit or, if you're comfortable with the command line, you can use https://rclone.org/. Source: 12 months ago
  • App that sync a folder to dropbox?
Maybe https://maestral.app/ can help you with that. Source: about 1 year ago
  • Dropbox axes 16%
Over time I've switched from Dropbox to Google Drive to iCloud as my primary way of storing files I want backed up and/or able to be shared. Replacing the Dropbox client with Maestral https://maestral.app meant a much happier system with a lighter application running. Also no prompts for the SD card to be uploaded. When Dropbox limited an account to 3 devices, it made sense to use Google Drive more. Google kept... - Source: Hacker News / about 1 year ago
  • Working Docker image for Dropbox?
If you can, make a container with https://maestral.app/. Source: about 1 year ago
  • After updating to macOS Ventura 13.2, when Dropbox is Syncing my External is Unusable, Hangs
The fix is don't use the Dropbox client. Use https://maestral.app/ instead. Source: about 1 year ago
  • Dropbox on Fedora 37
I suggest using the third party client Maestral (https://maestral.app/) . It is free, open source, and super easy to install. It doesn't count towards the 3-device limit on free Dropbox account. Source: about 1 year ago
  • Dropbox Syncing Problem
No one here will be able to help you as you're an outlier and the Dropbox linux app is a joke. Use https://maestral.app/ instead. Source: about 1 year ago
  • So the new API means cloud storage apps like Dropbox are automatically moved to a new CloudStorage folder that can’t be placed on an external drive. I also can’t upgrade my MBP storage because apple soldered it in. So now I’m limited to 256gb storage. Thanks Tim.
You can try Maestral, which is an open-source third-party Dropbox client for macOS/Linux. Source: about 1 year ago
  • Canceling and moving to Onedrive
Not sure what you’re looking for about the sync location statement at the end. That’s an Apple enforcer change. Don’t use the Dropbox client if you want the data to be elsewhere. Use an alternative like https://maestral.app. Source: about 1 year ago
  • Mac External Drive Question
Just move to https://maestral.app and you’ll be fine. Source: about 1 year ago
  • Dropbox halting support for external disks on MacOS :-(
I use https://maestral.app not sure if it’s impacted by this but I’ll be looking into it…. Source: about 1 year ago
  • Moving Dropbox from the Cloud Storage location on Ventura 13.2 back to external drive
This exists that lets you select an external drive and from what I've seen people mention it's a good alternative, but I haven't tried it. I don't know if it integrates with the finder either in terms of showing what is synced, not synced, or choosing offline-sync only etc. https://maestral.app/. I have to do a bit more research on it. • New Dropbox client moves files from –/ to –/Library
The only reason I’ve remained on the Dropbox free plan for a decade is because in the early years I was able to boost the free space to 25GB through referrals and contests. I use it as a quick way to sync files and access them from mobile devices (I have separate online backups not dependent on this). I’m not interested in buying yet another cloud storage plan from the major providers just for this. From this... - Source: Hacker News / about 1 year ago
  • Experience on macOS with new client using NSFileProvider
I saw in another thread someone linking to this client stating that it solved these issues https://maestral.app/. Might be worth investigating, but I imagine it's just a matter of time before it breaks. Source: over 1 year ago
  • Dropbox forcing "Files On-Demand" cloud storage instead of local storage
Https://maestral.app doesn't have this issue. Lightweight, Mac dropbox client. Source: over 1 year ago
  • Best cloud storage option for macOS in 2023
You can keep using Dropbox service with lower resource via https://maestral.app Or switch to iCloud. Source: over 1 year ago
  • Best cloud storage option for macOS in 2023
Do you have any problems with Dropbox besides ram usage? Have you looked at Maestral (https://maestral.app/) as an alternative app for Dropbox syncing? Source: over 1 year ago
  • Nix on the Steam Deck
What are you using for GUI with Linux? Given these are complaints you have, I’m guessing you aren’t using a userfriendly / more integrated distro. Ubuntu is totally GNU and has proprietary code, but it is pretty userfriendly. Anyway, in general: If you like Mac, use Gnome. That is the default in Ubuntu. If you like Windows, use KDE. That comes default in Kubuntu. Ubuntu is debian-based, so you need to use... - Source: Hacker News / over 1 year ago
  • Dropbox alternative now that external drive storage is unavailable
Ultimately the problem is with the official apps of cloud storage providers. Apple is forcing them to use File Provider APIs but that doesn't apply to 3rd party apps. In this case, since you're on mac, there is a fantastic 3rd party Dropbox client called Maestral which allows you to use any location for your Dropbox folder. Source: over 1 year ago
  • Why is Dropbox so trash?
I am also not using the standard dropbox-cli; I am using Maestral - perhaps you should try it. Source: over 1 year ago
  • Is there a way to put the dropbox folder on a network drive ?
Your best bet is to use an alternative client, like https://maestral.app/ if on a mac or rclone if on a windows machine. You won't get things like SmartSync but you can easily keep things synced and things won't flip out if the network is not available or takes a while to mount. Source: over 1 year ago
