  • Free software in my smartphone
The easiest option is to get a phone that can run a de-googled Android distribution. The most secure choice is a Google Pixel with GrapheneOS. However, if you don't want to give Google your money, there are more options for LineageOS. In either case, you'll get a bare-bones initial set of apps with no Google spyware. You can install FLOSS apps from F-Droid. - Source: Reddit / 1 day ago
  • De-googling my phone without replacing stock ROM.
Just so ya know the disable button is only there to make you feel good. Just like the location button. You are not the Admin of your own device until you take back control by flashing https://lineageos.org/ or something similar. " With out GAPPS.". - Source: Reddit / 9 days ago
  • The (GNU/)Linux rabbit hole has been a negative influence on my mental state
If you want privacy on a smart phone you're going to struggle but https://lineageos.org/ is a better start than PinePhone, you can just use a normal lineageos build, without google & f-droid for an app store. I'd recommend avoiding becoming super obsessed with custom builds, as based on your post, you'll love/hate them all and get very frustrated before giving up entirely, when the smart move is to just use stock... - Source: Reddit / 14 days ago

  • Americans want to delete Instagram more than any other app
    >If you’re on Android Facebook and Instagram can be installed by manufacturers with no option to delete. Which OEMs do that? I haven't seen that from HTC, Motorola or Google. Not being snarky here. I'd like to know who actually does so. Allowing me to avoid them in the future[0]. [0] I'd note that LineageOS[1] doesn't do that either. I highly recommend it! • Do any Linux phones have access to Apple App Store or Android App Store?
The three most popular ROMs right now are LineageOS, CalyxOS, and GrapheneOS. You must do your own research and decide which one is right for you. - Source: Reddit / 18 days ago
  • Ask HN: Which Android Phone is the least bloated and the most “free”?
As a stock experience, the google pixel phones are unbeatable, pretty much the "reference" edition of android phones. The nothing phone, made by one of 1+'s co-founders, is also fairly clean and has a different set of features. If you're willing to get your hands dirty, then you can install https://lineageos.org on several brands of phones (https://wiki.lineageos.org/devices/), and if you're willing to ditch... - Source: Hacker News / 29 days ago
  • De-Googled Android Phone Recommendations?
Appearence-wise, /e/OS has its own theme, but most of the custom rom are based on LineageOS (here is LineageOS's website btw). Also, those are the devices with official support, and with an official installation guide. Other devices might have working custom roms, look them up on the XDA forums, these can be tricker to install, since, while the general method is the same, there is no step-by-step tutorial, and... - Source: Reddit / about 1 month ago
  • Suggestions please! Smartphone. International, Mainland and Hong Kong version
I got a 小米 Mix2 (chiron) a while back because it's dual sim, has almost all the radio bands and offers a model with 256G of storage, loaded LineageOS onto it because MIUI is full of spyware, then fed it a HK sim card with a roaming data package (this one, but it doesn't offer a mainland phone number anymore like the sim I have unfortunately) so my mobile data roams to HK before hitting the internet at large. - Source: Reddit / about 1 month ago
  • Minimalist phone with some smartass functions
Check the list of phones supported by LineageOS (https://lineageos.org/). - Source: Reddit / about 1 month ago
  • What can Linux be used for, instead of Windows?
The main thing; it does not expire! Got Windows 8 or older? Expired! W-10 will soon be too. Linux? Up since 1991! Linux OS's will update & upgrade, but for example, unlike Android or iOS on phones, all Open Source iterations (EG) function in perpetuity. PC's that were rendered useless with Windows 8 or earlier (abandoned by MS), are all restored back to functional life with Linux! And it's free! - Source: Reddit / about 1 month ago
  • what custom ROM can I install on Xperia tablet z?
I cannot find any that still support this specific model. However, you can take a gander at https://lineageos.org/ for possibilities. - Source: Reddit / about 1 month ago
  • pixel 5 EOL - October 2023
Pixels are easy to unlock for alternative Android-based OSes that may be supported for longer. Some popular ones are LineageOS and GrapheneOS. - Source: Reddit / about 1 month ago
  • rip Pixel 4 4XL
If you have the bootloader unlocked version, you can always install LineageOS to continue getting updates indefinitely. It's one of the best things about buying a phone with an unlocked bootloader. - Source: Reddit / about 2 months ago
  • looking for advice- substitute for a smartphone?
Easiest thing to do is go look at https://lineageos.org list of phones, choose one well supported, buy it used on ebay. You need to buy one that is oem unlocked (not the same as carrier unlocked to install an OS. - Source: Reddit / about 2 months ago
  • Camera aside, would you class the 5T (not standard model) as usable.
LineageOS: https://lineageos.org/ which is now Android 13 on the 5T. I like LineageOS as its generally well polished and maintained. Essentially it's stock Android with some useful additions. A lot of other roms are based on the work the Lineage team do. - Source: Reddit / about 2 months ago
  • Camera aside, would you class the 5T (not standard model) as usable.
Sure, the rom is LineageOS: https://lineageos.org/ I'd start at the info page for the 5T: https://wiki.lineageos.org/devices/dumpling/ - this has links to the rom downloads page and the installation instructions. - Source: Reddit / about 2 months ago
  • My new ventures on eInk devices
I have been using a google-free LineageOS phone for the past 10 years and if you do not already know it, I would suggest you take a look at the fdroid-store to find google free software more easily, the microg project in case you still require some google functionality, but do not want to trust in gapps and organicmaps as an alternative to google maps and maybe syncthing in combination with keepassxc to have... - Source: Reddit / 2 months ago
  • How to install Android one on any android phone?
I have searched on custom ROM website such as Pixel Experience and Lineage OS on both custom mod website my phone manufacturer is not supported. I guess that's the downside of the low-end budget friendly phone. PS: My phone is Techno Spark 6 GO. - Source: Reddit / 3 months ago

  • Iphone or Android? Why?
If I were to buy my own phone, I'd buy an Android primarily because of projects like LineageOS and LineageOS for microG which are projects that aim to make Android more privacy respecting. Not such an option for iphones. - Source: Reddit / 3 months ago
