  I think you are on the right track. For me, the first version works better because the mark-up colour of the line is picked up again in the pin. I'm not sure what to make of the distorted pin in the second image, to be honest. It doesn't suggest a location, or "place", which is probably what you were trying to achieve with the pin as a stylistic device. What will definitely give the logo the final touch in the end...   That documentary about Helvetica is amazing. I actually recommend it to my students and show them the kerning game as examples of how design choices typically become invisible unless done poorly.
