It was my love for indie games that lead me to itch.io, though I found myself drawn to the solo Tabletop Role-Playing Games published there. This was helped by Dan Qui Dam maintaining The Hermits Club, which is a list of such titles available on the platform. I have based most of my downloads on that list. - Source: dev.to / 5 months ago
In many of my projects, I also have some local files that I use to pack up and deliver the project to itch.io. I want to ignore most of the tools related to that as well, so my .gitignore will also contain:. - Source: dev.to / about 1 year ago

As several people has pointed out here, don't focus on programming. That can kill the urge to make games pretty quick. And an important thing often overlooked, is prototyping. Whatever kind of game you are making, find a way to make a fast mockup using paper or whatever - and test it. That being said, you should take a look at simple game engines like; Twine, GDevelop, TyranoBuilder and PICO-8. Remember; the... - Source: Hacker News / over 1 year ago
Publishing on platforms like itch.io are a great way to get feedback (but see comments about comments earlier!) and to see if an idea is worth pursuing. Self-published mini-games are also a good way to scratch that gamedev itch when it isn't your day job too - I should push a couple myself actually! - Source: dev.to / about 2 years ago

Combat is as gritty as the GM makes it. Healing is TOUGH out of the box, so by default it is already pretty gritty. In fact, part of the crew premise is players can have a few 'cast of characters' that sub in when a PC is in a rough spot. You as the GM choose what type of physical harm to give out, and how often - so it's pretty controllable. Like I said, look at itch.io for some alternate healing ideas if you... I have just registered at itch.io and paid $10 for kudos. I don't have a GPU-equipped PC, I am just curious about the Horde system. Downloaded the client to my Windows laptop and ran it to generate a 512x512 picture of Julia fractal (my test prompt) with the Midjourney model, there seemed to be no SDXL models to choose from. It took about a minute to generate. The 2nd generation (with the same prompt), which took... Source: over 2 years ago

Our Life: Beginnings & Always is a visual novel game, BUT I have never felt such cozy goodness in my life. You can find the free game on Steam or itch.io. It's about growing up on an island with your best friend since childhood and you can romance him, if I'm about to have a panic attack I usually boot it up and just read/enjoy. Does anyone know my rights here? I feel like I should be safe since they don't own the rights to the game outright, but obviously I don't want to do it this way if there's any chance they could come after me. I know I would be 100% fine if I just put them on itch.io and the epic store, but of course I want them on steam as well. Source: over 2 years ago

Itch.io has established itself as a prominent platform within the indie gaming scene, earning a reputation for supporting independent developers and offering a diverse array of games that span unique and experimental genres. As succinctly characterized in recent discussions and reviews, it stands out as a niche alternative to mainstream gaming platforms like Steam, focusing predominantly on indie game distribution.
The appeal of Itch.io lies in its open submission policy, which allows developers to upload their creations and set pricing models that often include a "pay-what-you-want" option. This flexibility not only empowers developers but also encourages consumers to directly support creators by paying above the minimum suggested price when they find a game particularly compelling.
Through this business model, Itch.io has emerged as a fertile ground for burgeoning game developers to test and refine their ideas. Many users have noted that several indie successes on Steam had their humble beginnings on Itch.io, further cementing its role as an incubator for innovative games. This characteristicโcoupled with the absence of major publisher-backed titlesโallows Itch.io to offer a wide array of games, from professional indie products to amateur and experimental projects. For those interested in exploring gaming's creative frontier, Itch.io is akin to an "eccentric bric-a-brac shop," hosting everything from curious oddities to games that push the boundaries of conventional design.
User opinions reflect an appreciation for the creativity and risk-taking fostered on the platform. Plays, reviews, and recommendations posted on Itch.io often highlight the creativity involved in game development, making it a vital community hub for indie game artists and enthusiasts. In particular, the platform supports a vibrant ecosystem where aspiring developers can obtain feedback, push mini-projects, and participate in game jams that cater specifically to indie game producers.
A minor hiccup in Itch.io's operations involved a temporary takedown related to brand protection issues, as noted in recent posts. While this incident highlighted potential challenges surrounding brand integrity, the platform maintained its reputation by clarifying that it was a localized issue, quickly addressed without affecting the broader community.
The breadth of available content on Itch.io, from free-to-play offerings to more curated collections, has broadened its appeal beyond hardcore gamers to include hobbyists and those seeking unique gaming experiences. Discussants on various platforms frequently cite Itch.io not only as a resource for finding innovative games but also as a tool for aspiring game developers looking to test or showcase their work outside traditional gaming circuits.
In summary, Itch.io is well-regarded as an inclusive and innovative space that fosters indie game development, while also serving as a vibrant community platform. By embracing a non-traditional approach to game distribution and monetization, it has carved a distinct niche in the gaming industry, continually amplified by positive user engagement and creative exploration.
