  I got it to work now, not exactly sure how, because I'm pretty sure I had this exact config before. So now I enter my domain, like example.com, and in chrome it gets properly directed to my website, on https://www.exampe.com.   What you're looking for is called "split DNS". Basically, on your internal DNS server, you'll create a zone for example.com, and put all the internal IP entries you want in there. Based off my experience, more and more captive portals appear to be letting the requests the OS makes to captive.apple.com or whatever through but still try to present a captive portal to the user.
