I'm guessing GP means natively, not in a VM. I've been super grateful for the VM-based method, but I still prefer the native experience like that provided by Crouton[1]. With Crouton being "maintenance-only" now I share GP's hope that a similar thing will be possible and easy. [1]: https://github.com/dnschneid/crouton. - Source: Hacker News / 9 months ago
Go to the github of crouton they have instructions there Https://github.com/dnschneid/crouton. Source: 10 months ago
At any rate, you can try Breath, Crouton, Manjaro... Those are three of the distros people have found success with. It all boils down to the specific hardware involved... Which we know nothing about since you kept that to yourself. Source: 11 months ago
Post in r/crouton and refer to https://github.com/dnschneid/crouton if you haven't already. However, I think it's fair to say that Crouton is now broken to the point of being effectively dead. Source: 11 months ago
Crouton is no longer developed and this is the wrong sub but check r/Crouton and/or https://github.com/dnschneid/crouton. Source: about 1 year ago
You can play minecraft on a chromebook. First you have to install ubuntu. Before you install it, the chromebook has to be in developer mode. You enable developer mode by first shutting off the chromebook, then hold the keys, escape, reload, and the power button all at the same time. Do note that enabling developer mode wipes all user data from the device. After that it will boot to a screen that says that Chrome... Source: about 1 year ago
Install Crouton and run Linux on your Chromebook without VM/container penalties. More complicated than Crostini but also better performance. https://github.com/dnschneid/crouton. Source: about 1 year ago
I used the crouton install developed by D Schneider as available on github, Basically that means that I didn't do the Install other than run his auto-install: https://github.com/dnschneid/crouton. Source: over 1 year ago
Also, if you don't want your games to be a slideshow, run Steam through crouton, since the default Crostini container uses an emulated VirGL GPU, which severely reduces performance. Source: over 1 year ago
Follow the current installation instructions at https://github.com/dnschneid/crouton. Source: over 1 year ago
IMO if you want to do this you'll need to install Ubuntu(or another fully-fledged Linux distro) on your Chromebook using either Crouton, Breath, or by flashing a Coreboot firmware and installing Linux on the hardware, then using the instructions for regular Linux. If you flash a Coreboot firmware you will in some ways un-Google the device and won't be able to use regular ChromeOS anymore unless you return to a... Source: over 1 year ago
The alternative to the web tools would be to chroot your os with crouton (or go for a more permanent solution like chrubuntu) and install the tools through wine. I know that the tools work on normal linux installs with wine, and they should through crouton too, but probably not if you have one of the ARM processor chromebooks. Source: over 1 year ago
Because it's not intended that ChromeOS users should need to modify the base operating system (e.g. To install software), it doesn't come with a package manager like apt or emerge. (However, you can install one if you want using something like Chromebrew* or Crouton*.). Source: over 1 year ago
Native ChromeOS? Depends on what you mean. If you mean access to a shell , ETC then you can but you need it in developer mode, something I wouldn't recommend if you're just a casual user. The Crostini container should work just fine. It uses LXD so it won't be as slow as a virtual-machine or anything so there's no need to worry about performance degradation when encoding video with Ffmpeg. There's going to be some... Hello... IF you are doing this via crouton, then have a look at https://github.com/dnschneid/crouton for all the commands and documentation. Source: over 1 year ago
Yes. You can use https://github.com/dnschneid/crouton, or, if yours is intel, you also could flash a standard UEFI or BIOS with https://mrchromebox.tech/#fwscript, preferably if you remove the write protect screw, completely replacing ChromeOS, maybe with something like GalliumOS. People like myself in that small demographic didn't buy them because of ChromeOS, they were purchased because of crouton - https://github.com/dnschneid/crouton. Source: over 1 year ago
Well it's a hacky installation because it's on a Chromebook in a dodgy chroot via Crouton. Source: almost 2 years ago
In order of decreasing isolation: For hardware and system's security QubesOS(i) is superb for isolation at the (virtual)machine layer. This talk(ii) from Micah Lee when 4.0 launched is a great overview/preview. It's my daily driver, and I find it indispensable. For software security any standard linux distro you can utilize encrypted chroots(iv). This is how things like crouton(v) work on ChromiumOS. For... - Source: Hacker News / almost 2 years ago
There is no way to change OS on an ARM powered CB. You only can run Linux as chroot environment like Crouton https://github.com/dnschneid/crouton. In the end this will bring no advantage over crostini. Source: almost 2 years ago
You can also enable crouton and install a Linux Desktop inside a chroot. Or boot a full-fledged Linux Distro from a USB(With Breath or MrChromebox's firmware.). Source: almost 2 years ago
