    It's not NASA, but check out zooniverse.org if you haven't already. They have a rotating series of projects where you can get involved analyzing all sorts of things. Right now one of them is identifying distant galaxies to help measure dark energy. Source: almost 2 years ago

You make a good point about volunteer work, when I had nothing else to do I started volunteering on zooniverse.org to keep busy. I think one way or the other, enough people would start wanting to do some kind of projects or work that not everyone would be sitting at home all the time, even if in the future not...
