Sometimes all you want to do is quickly record something and send it to someone without having to edit it or fiddle with a bunch of settings. This is where Zappy comes in handy. The menu bar icon or a keyboard shortcut are used to launch this app. Choose which part of the screen you want to record, then press the video camera button.

Xnip is another good one. There is a free version with fewer features and a paid one. It supports built in annotation.
