For housing options you can try websites for renting a room listed at hotpads.com, roomster.com, and spareroom.com. When you can afford to look at rent.com, apartments.com, or zillow.com. For help finding rentals based on price look at rentometer.com. If there is in immediate call hostels for rent rates. You can try hostelworld.com or hostels.com. Couchsurfing: my preferred way of touring: you get to meet great and likeminded people, you don't have to lug around camping gear (although it's good to bring an indoor-sleeping bag). The site with name couchsurfing.com is broken. But the oldschool warmshowers.org and the new couchers.org are great!
