Couchsurfing: my preferred way of touring: you get to meet great and likeminded people, you don't have to lug around camping gear (although it's good to bring an indoor-sleeping bag). The site with name couchsurfing.com is broken. But the oldschool warmshowers.org and the new couchers.org are great! Since you used the accommodation company by name in a plant post, I'd like to comment that there is an italian based accommodation cooperative thats combating all the harm done by airbnb, or at least stay in a properly regulated hotel in a commercially zoned district. Source: over 2 years ago
