Once I got the basics down with duolingo and kept improving I added some vocabulary and spaced repetition programs - my favorite was clozemaster. Started with Duolingo before I got too committed to the language, confirmed I was interested and dedicated to daily learning and so got a textbook that had available audio (often found on youtube after some digging), and saw the most improvement when I joined a language site that had lessons. I have tried using spaced repetition with Mnemosyne for math, specifically for learning Category Theory. It did help. Spaced repetition seems to work better for me if the answers to the questions are short (like learning Spanish vocabulary). When doing math, you often want to remember an entire definition, which might be too long to use spaced repetition flash cards effectively. Source: about 1 year ago
