I don't own a cell phone and my computer is entirely free, its BIOS replaced with libreboot running Trisquel, a 100% free-software operating system. Others can do this, too, if they really want the freedom. It is not hard, nor does it require expertise. It only requires the will to do it. Source: 12 months ago

There's Trisquel, which is a GNU approved distro based on Ubuntu with all the non-free stuff removed. Otherwise I'd suggest something Debian or Devuan based, like MX Linux or Refracta. Source: over 1 year ago

My first choice is always Peppermint OS. Peppermint has worked really well on just about everything I've thrown it on, uses XFCE desktop (generally great for older hardware), and doesn't come with a bunch of stuff preinstalled that you'll not likely use. It's Debian-based, so you'll feel familiar in the environment since you've been using Mint. Source: about 1 year ago
