on an old budget laptop, what nonessential things can I delete to make Linux Mint run smoother?

Xubuntu is another XFCE desktop-driven Ubuntu-based environment that should also feel familiar.

  2. Peppermint was designed for enhanced mobility, efficiency and ease of use.
My first choice is always Peppermint OS. Peppermint has worked really well on just about everything I've thrown it on, uses XFCE desktop (generally great for older hardware), and doesn't come with a bunch of stuff preinstalled that you'll not likely use. It's Debian-based, so you'll feel familiar in the environment since you've been using Mint.

  3. Lightweight Linux distribution based on Manjaro and using the Openbox window manager.
Mabox Linux boasts a minimal installation footprint like some others, which is typically a good sign for older hardware. I haven't played with this one a lot, but I'm liking what I see so far, and that it's Manjaro-based is a bit of a pivot from the usual Debian-based environments I tend to snap up.

  4. Application and Data, Languages & Frameworks, and Operating Systems
AntiX is still Debian, but with systemd ripped out, and using IceWm for the desktop. It bills itself as the OS to revive that old machine, and indeed, I have put it on those disposable old EEE PC's without much complaint. Unless you're already super deep into using and managing your Linux system, you probably won't notice the absence of systemd unless some package specifically demands its presence. In short, it's a service manager that tried to simplify/automate a few things, and people seem to either love it or hate it.
