I figured there must be something better, so next time I needed to do translation (for a smaller shop with more stable products, admittedly), I went for TranslatePress since I could choose my own stack. WAAAAY better. The front-end editing WYSIWIG sort of interface is so much more intuitive for the people managing the content, and after an initial training sesh I haven't had to answer a single question from anyone...
