Foundations of Game Engine Development. There are only two books out in the series. But Eric Lengyel has really good math books. The editors are basically immediately off limits for anyone who wants to mod the base game rapidly for their own enjoyment. A concept like http://sauerbraten.org/ is interesting, but seems to not have taken off for various reasons. N-Space 2 will let you build on multiple levels of detail. Instead of a single size of cube, there is an adjustable "grid" which scales from 1/16 of a block to 2 blocks.
