This has been in circulation since a while AI images took off, and they certainly weren't convincing before they did. You know the old "try to name one thing in this image" macro? Pretty sure that was AI generated, there was also thispersondoesnotexist.com which was always pretty good but of course it is. Source: 5 months ago

Tineye and Foto Forensics. Do you want to know if an image is shopped, cropped or otherwise altered? Using these two tools you've got a good chance of finding out. Found it. The technique is called Error Level Analysis, and the earliest purveyor was Foto Forensics, which still provides limited free access. There are other such tools now, some built into programs like Photoshop itself. Source: about 1 year ago
